New Junior State of America Club

The Junior State of America is a non-partisan student-run organization that strives to educate our youth about politics to become effective citizens and future voters. The organization is divided into clubs at the high school level called school chapters. Twice every school year,  all the Arizona  high school JSA chapters convene together for an overnight convention with debates, thought talks, and guest speaker question and answer sessions. At the school chapter level, students participate in debates, mock trials, thought talks, and can invite political officials to discuss their work in politics. Each of these facets of the JSA allows students to polish their leadership, public speaking, and knowledge about domestic  and worldwide issues.

On August 25, 2009, the Tempe Preparatory Academy JSA chapter met for the first time to discuss the direction of the club. The great number of interested students was an encouraging beginning for the chapter's inaugural meeting.  The chapter meeting times for the JSA club is every other Tuesday after school until 4:00 p.m. in room 302. The club is open to all high school students. Prospective junior high students are encouraged to come observe chapter activities to learn about JSA.  For further information about the Junior State of America please contact Kavin Tamizhmani at kavint1@yahoo.com or (480) 632-5613.

Student Seminars in Science and Engineering (SISE) Club

The Seminars in Science Engineering Club promotes scientific learning and inquiry in the Tempe Prep community.  Its focus revolves around student-run activities such as seminars involving scientific issues, theories, and student presentations on researched topics. Occasionally, a guest speaker working in a scientific field will be invited to come discuss their work and have a question/answer session with students. Club meetings will be held every other Tuesday until 4 p.m., and membership is open to all junior and high school TPA students. Please contact Kavin Tamizhmani at kavint1@yahoo.com or (480) 632-5613 for further details.

Students Invited to Start Speech & Debate in January

January starts the second half of the season.  If you were not able to compete this fall due to sports, college applications, workload, job, foreign mission, military call-up, etc. consider coming back, or joining up for the second half.  We will start with a small tournament January 15-16 at Valley Christian High – perfect for a first timer!  There will be at least 3 more tournaments, then the State Championship on March 19-20.  If you happen to win your event at state, you receive $150 from the Forensic League of Arizona.

Seniors!  There are a whole bunch of very talented seniors that have never considered doing Speech & Debate that I would really like to come to state.  It’s not just current events and arguments.  There are many events that are acting short scenes or interpreting a short story that could be hilarious. There’s something for everyone.  I can work with you so it’s not a big time commitment and you’ll have some fun too.  Help us win state in 2010!  Contact me soon and we can make a plan. Bring a friend. Mr. Wolnisty at TPADebate@cox.net
