Junior High PE Requirement

Participation in extra-curricular athletics is required of all students in grades 6, 7 & 8. Such
activity develops traits of teamwork, leadership, and discipline that can pay dividends in academic endeavors, as well. Participation also offers great opportunities to develop strong friendships with classmates. Each junior high student is required to engage in at least one season of a sport, and there are numerous sports from which to choose at TPA. Although we highly encourage each student to fulfill this requirement at school, in the case where a student participates in athletic activity outside of school (e.g., Little League, club soccer, a swimming team), the family may substitute that activity for a sport at TPA. The family must request a waiver from the front office, and the director/coach of that activity must verify that the student's participation amounts to 60 hours of athletic activity.  Please note, the activity must be in an organized sport.  Parent supervised exercise will not be accepted for PE credit.

New Limited Roster Policy for Sports

The TPA athletic limited roster policy applies to Seniors trying out for varsity team sports (football, volleyball, basketball, soccer, baseball, softball) in which there are multiple levels of competition (Freshman/JV/Varsity) and the need to limit a team roster.  On teams in which there is ONLY a varsity team, the limited roster policy is not in place. In any season when a limited roster policy is in place, the Athletic Department will provide an alternate sport for the 12th grader to participate in, which there will be NO limits on rosters in place.

The policy is only to be in place as long as the AIA bylaws state that 12th graders cannot play on Junior Varsity teams in the Conference in which we have been placed. No players that wish to participate on a high school team and abide by all TPA Handbook and individual sports handbook policies can be dismissed before their Senior year.

Incoming seniors are allowed to participate in summer camps, open gyms and tournaments the summer before their senior year in order to continue to advance their skills. Any limits, if necessary, will be done after a pre-determined tryout schedule that will be communicated prior to the first day of tryouts. The coaching staff will then determine placement of all players on teams: Freshman (if applicable), Junior Varsity, and Varsity. Any limit to rosters, if necessary, will be handled individually by the head coach with sensitivity and compassion. They will not post lists, but rather, talk personally with each athlete and emphasize their strengths, discuss needed areas of improvement, and indicate that athlete's status with regard to the team and program. All dismissals will be discussed with the Athletic Director prior to the discussion with the athlete. A minimum number of roster spots will be determined by the Head Coach and Athletic Director before the first day of tryouts. This number must be communicated clearly to all players and parents before tryouts begin. The coach may NOT go below this minimum number on the roster, but may go over.

Any 12th grader not named to the varsity team in that particular sport will be offered a Student Manager position (up to 4 positions would be available in all team sports, 5 for volleyball). Those positions will include: videographer, statistician, facilities manager, scorekeeper (2 for volleyball). Should that student choose to fulfill one of those positions as a Student Manager, they will be required to adhere to all Student Manager policies as set forth by the Athletic Handbook and Head Coach. They will attend all games, including travel with the team. If all duties are performed in accordance with the Athletic Handbook and Team Handbook, that student is eligible to letter in that sport as Student Manager.

This limited roster policy will begin for the 2010-2011 school year and be included in the Athletic Handbook and any team handbook in which there are multiple levels of competition.

Upgrade your fan status!  Bring your checkbook to the next game and purchase Knights Football T-shirts, freshly-grilled burgers, hot dogs and other concessions.  Better yet, become a member of the Touchdown Club for only $25.

Consider purchasing a subscription to ESPN Magazine as well.   For every $40 subscription, the Touchdown Club keeps $30, or 75%.  To participate, ask a Knights football player or click here: DOWNLOAD ESPN FORM and then attach your check and return it to the TPAPO mail box in the school office. For more information, contact Mike Whalen, mike@newline.net.

Don't have a player on the field but find yourself at games anyway? Working in the concession stand is a fun way to meet other parents, build community and give football parents an opportunity to watch their sons play!  Contact Touchdown Club VP, Lynda Hartzler (hartzlerdl@cox.net).

Go Knights!

Volleyball for Grades 6-8

Coach Schwartz, kschwartz@tempeprep.org

During our first practices, we will do some activities to discern the skill level of each player so that we can place them on teams accordingly. The weekly time commitment will be 3 days (either games or practice), except for one week when there is an all day Saturday Spike It Tournament and the end-of-season playoffs. I will be coaching the more competitive gold team. Mr. Ditsworth also returns as a coach this year. A date for the informational meeting has not been confirmed yet.

We are in need of quality volleyballs. If you can donate volleyballs, please contact Coach Schwartz.

High School Volleyball Team Welcomes New Coach

Coach Barlow, l_barlow@mac.com

I am originally from Connecticut and came out to Arizona to attend ASU where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I have been married to my husband, Mike, for 27 years and we have three daughters and a son. My two older daughters play(ed) college volleyball and my son plays college basketball. My youngest daughter attends Seton Catholic.

I have been coaching volleyball for 14 years, including Mt. Carmel, McClintock High School, and Club teams. I am very excited to be part of the TPA community and to help build student athletes and young women. TPA is a very strong academic school with an outstanding administration and community support. I am very grateful to Mrs. Calahan for the opportunity to join the program.  My goal is to make championships a Tempe Prep volleyball tradition!

Try-outs took place Monday, 8/2, Tues.,8/3, Wed., 8/4: 6:00-8:00pm

Practice: M-F: 3:45-5:45pm

Please come out and support the teams and follow our progress on our Knight Volleyball Facebook page (CLICK HERE).

High School Football - WE NEED YOUR HELP

Mrs. Calahan, Athletic Director, ncalahan@tempeprep.org

The high school football team has a record number of players participating this fall - 56!!

However, we did not anticipate this number when we calculated our 2010-2011 budget for football.    We need to outfit 16 new players, plus replace worn and damaged equipment!   Please consider how you might like to "sponsor" a Tempe Prep football player. Outlined below is a list of what equipment will be ordered to accommodate our large numbers.

Helmet - $125
Shoulder Pads - $120
Home and Away Game Jersey - $150
Home and Away Game Pants - $75
All Other Pads $30
Completely outfit one player:  $500

You can choose to sponsor a portion of the equipment listed above from one item, two items, etc. or choose to sponsor an entire player for $500.  Please contact Nancy Calahan, Athletic Director, to help with this budget crisis.  This contribution would be in addition to your annual tax credit to support all Tempe Prep extra-curriculars.  If you choose to remain anonymous, please indicate so on your check, as I wish to publish all names of donors in our football game programs.  All checks should be made out to Tempe Prep Academy and "sponsor football player" indicated on the memo line.  You can also give by credit card on the Tempe Prep website via PayPal (please note that you are donating to sponsor a football player).

Thanks for supporting Knights football!
